What Nourishes Your Soul? – (Chapter: Chapter Five)

“How do you even find a place like this?”, Ashley asked looking around, taking it all in.

“Well, like I said Mr. Chang is an old friend of my family’s. His oldest daughter works with my father at the community center. I’ve known him before that though, since I was a little kid. He’s like an uncle.”, Spencer said smiling. It was obviously she really cared for the older man.

“Why is it so hidden?”, Ashley asked looking over at Spencer. Spencer looked incredible tonight, her eyes framed in dark eyeliner making her blue eyes look piercing. Bless Mr. Chang for lighting this place in only candles because they bathed her in this beautiful warm glow, God she was gorgeous.

“Well it’s mostly for people like me; chefs that need somewhere to go after getting off work, just to unwind and have a bit to eat.”, Spencer said looking at Ashley, watching the candle flicker across her face.

“Yeah, that makes sense. It must be good for chefs to come here.”

“It is mind-blowing. Mr. Chang has a real passion for what he does and it shows. He’s really old-school and doesn’t speak much English. He’s taught me a lot about cooking.”

“I take that is where you learned to speak Chinese so well.”, Ashley added.

“Yeah, I’ve learned over the years and now I’m fluent. Mr. Chang and his family goes back to China every year and they take me with them sometimes. I went a few years back and it changed the way I look at things and at food.”

“Well, it sounds so amazing. And, you sure learned to speak the language.”

Spencer laughed, “It wasn’t easy but, I had to learn. If I didn’t I couldn’t learn to cook from Mr. Chang. So, that was enough to make me practice.”

“Hey, what were you saying about me back there to make you two smile so much?”, Ashley asked unable to resist any longer.

“I was wondering when you’d ask that.”, Spencer chuckled a little shifting in her seat. Ashley watched as the girl got a bit uncomfortable.

“And..”, Ashley asked with a smirk.

“Well when he came in he was screaming about the butcher shop being closed, thought we were customers. And, I said hello uncle. Then he asked how my father was and I told him. Then he saw you standing there and I introduced you.”, Spencer rambling out uneasily.
